What first draws the eye to this sampler is the wonderfully oversized and unusual bird—an irresistible detail for anyone who loves odd birds in antique samplers. Just as charming is the small hunter accompanied by his English Springer Spaniel, a motif that adds warmth, personality, and a sense of story to the piece.
Ellen, the young stitcher behind this sampler, must have been a lively and creative child. Her bold color choices and playful motifs suggest a joyful spirit, especially remarkable given that she finished the sampler in 1852 at just 11 years old. In the lower right corner, you’ll notice an additional initial and age stitched alongside simpler motifs. Model stitcher Natalia Canaday has suggested this may have been contributed by Ellen’s younger sister—a touching detail that adds even more meaning to this historic piece.
The model is stitched over two threads on 40-count Paperbark linen by Fox and Rabbit, using floss from Weeks Dye Works, Classic Colorworks, and The Gentle Art.
